Night
By: Elie Wiesel
Elie Wiesel, also known as Eliezer Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928, in the town of Sighet, now part of Romania. The guardians and parental figures who raised Elie in a Jewish family are Shloma and Sarah. Elie’s parents have used to own a grocery store in the village. Eliezer grew up with three sisters: two older sisters called Hilda and Bea, and the youngest sibling, Tsiporah. Growing with only sisters makes Elie the only boy in the family. In his early life, at the age of three, he had learned Hebrew, the Bible, and Talmud by attending a Jewish school called Yeshiva. His grandfather, a well-known Hasid and Moshe, a caretaker of a synagogue inspired and sparked spiritual beliefs in Eliezer. Eventually, he learned about the Messiah and studied the faith of Judaism.
In his early life, during World War II, he, his family and other Jews, were transported to a German concentration and extermination camps where his family and him suffered. Yes, the event that historically impacted Elie as a person was the holocaust. Shortly, the holocaust is described as the mass slaughter of Jews under the German Nazi occurring in the period of 1941-1945. Over more than 6 million of European Jews along with gypsies and homosexuals were murdered at concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Elie as well as his two older sisters have survived and endured the massacre. In the early evening, the American militia came and released all the prisoners in the camp. Wiesel came up with an illness due to intestinal problems, after liberation. Spent his time hospitalized, he had written a book summarizing his horrific experiences and tragedies he has encountered in the holocaust. Expressed the idea of humans perished for their own religious beliefs. He moved on with his life, his novel “Night” molded him into an award winning novelist. Later on he was noted a Holocaust survivor, journalist, and a human rights activist who promotes peace and justice in several countries.
Nearing to the late life, he has been awarded and decorated for many of his accomplishments. Also importantly, he followed his passion as a professor. Elie taught as a professor in the University of New York Judaic studies. He also instructs others in the Humanities at Boston University. Later on, he became the Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council through 1980-1986. Wiesel has founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity with his wife, Marion Wiesel. Elie has been awarded with the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, honored with the French Legion of Honor's Grand Croix, and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. In conclusion, Eliezer Wiesel has promoted justice and equality who appeals us to not judge others by their religious faith and beliefs.
