The narrator of the The Outsiders is a 14 year old boy named Ponyboy, the youngest of three brothers where his parents were killed in a car accident.

Two groups of teenagers that Ponyboy describes are the Socs and Greasers. The Socs, known as the socials, are in a rich class from the Western side who typpically drives cars. Other group known as the Greasers, live on the East side, which Ponyboy is a part of. Greaser are considers destitute, low-lives who cannot afford to drive cars. The Socs have more money than them, and they are not as luxurious as they are.
3. Why did the Socs beat up Ponyboy?
Walking home from the movies, he Socs jump him and beat him because the fact that he is a Greaser and alone means he's an open target as well as being the smallest in the pack.
4. Why did Ponyboy have a hard time with his oldest brother?
Darry, the oldest brother, gives Ponyboy a hard time because Darry expects more out of Ponyboy. Darry comes from the strict and has higher standards for Ponyboy because he's intelligent and whats him to have a better occupation than Darry which is fixing rooftops.

Steve Randall is a seventeen year old person who works at the gas station and is knowledgeable with cars. Soda's his best friend, but he rather hates his brother, Ponyboy.
Keith, nicknamed two-bits Matthew, seems to be an outcast which no one is really fond of him. 18 and the oldest of the gang and is still a junior in high school. He's always joking and always has something to say.
Dallas Winston, known as Dally, from New York. He's the toughest of the gang and is rambunctious, and has a reputation with the police.
Johnny Kade- Everyone's kid brother. He's the pet of the gang.
Sodapop- Seventeen years old and is Ponyboy's brother. According to himself, has movie star looks.

The Author uses non-standard English because she tries Ponyboy's perspective of his state of mind and wants the reader to be immersed in his perspective.

The Greaser are considered low-lives, classed group that do not have enough money, and have beaten, old cars.

The Socs and Greasers hang out in the drive ins and watch the nightly double.

By interacting with the Socs' women, the Greaser are able to understand the Socs better.
3. What kind of rules do gang members follow in fights?
One standard they commit to is fist fighting has to be fair, but with weapon it's rough as well as fight between a one vs. one situation rather than the whole group against the one member.
4. How could Cherry be a problem for Dally?
Cherry can be a nuisance to dally because she can expose him to the police or the Socs beating him up.
5. Why do you think Johnny spoke up to Dally?
he's putting dally in his place in which the girls have not done anything.

the Greasers tend to disobey the law.

Cherry's real name is Sherri, and they call her sherri because of her dark, red hair.

Ponyboy become good friends because the can both talk to each other, honest to each other, an have marts conversations in which both very open to one another.
2. Do the characters in this book seam “real”? Why or why not? How does try to make them believable?
The characters in this book seem to be "real" and this can be believable. Some characters have sitautions that have happened in real life.
3. Why did Cherry and Marcia leave their dates?
Cherry and Marcia leave their dates because they were preventing a fight.
4. Why do you think Darry hit Ponyboy?
Darry hits Ponyboy because he stayed up all night waiting and wrrying for him to come home, so when he says its an accident he gets frustrated. Also, he has gotten angry when Ponyboy took actions to defend SodaPop. Istead, it makes him he's sides with sodapop than him.
5. Why do you think Ponyboy and Cherry told each other things they had never told anyone else before?
Ponyboy and Cherry tells things they had never told anyone before because they trust each other. Also, they are identfying each other.
6. Do you agree with Johnny that having friends care for you is not the same as having your own folks care about you? Why or why not?
I agree with Johnny because when you are in a family, your family are always going to be there because of that unbreakable bond. Your family stays with you throughout your entire life. But, friends sort of come and go. They are not always with you throughout your entire life.
7. What did Cherry say was the main difference between the Socs and the Greasers?
Cherry says that Greasers have a different set of values in which they are emotional rather than Socs being sophisticated.

The Socs were angry and the Greasers were scared of the consequences. The relationship to bob caused the Socs to act the way they did.

Dallas Winston can do anything because he was older and they trusted him.
